On March 26, 2011, the SPARCK duo gave two talks at the triennial meeting of ACASA, the Arts Council of the African Studies Association, a key venue for scholarship on the arts of Africa and the African Diaspora. One talk, by Kadiatou Diallo, focused on SPARCK’s interest in South-South engagement, looking in particular at the “Photographic Journeys” Phase II projects: Goddy Leye and Bill Kouélany’s “Chocolate Banana” (Guangzhou, China); the recent “IMAG[IN]ING CITIES” happening (Karachi, Pakistan); and Stacy’s Hardy’s foray into the United Arab Emirates (May 2011). The other talk, by Dominique Malaquais, focused on Hervé Youmbi’s SPARCK project “Totems to Haunt Our Dreams”, which has to date been shown in Dakar, Cotonou, Johannesburg and New York. Both talks were presented on a panel organised by Joanna Grabski (chair of the Art History department at Denison University) and Dominique Malaquais, entitled “Urban Spaces / Market Spaces”. The 2011 ACASA triennial’s thematic focus was the nature, complexities, history and future of intersections between African art and the marketplace, a subject of considerable interest to SPARCK in the context of its first 3-year programme, “Net/Works”.
